Our first road trip with a baby. Thankfully, G napped and was super chill the whole time. The drive to Virginia was a slow one, there are no direct interstate routes from Durham. Page has road rage, but managed to make our drive only slightly terrifying. I have several irrational fears, most of the time I feel like death is imminent in the car. I normally calm myself with statistics and reflect on how many people I know are actually still living. Often, there is a movie playing in my head of the darkest most awful thing that could happen at any given moment.
We stopped at a pizza place in Lynchburg,VA to have the worst pizza I’ve ever eaten. On our way back home we had some banging pizza from Radius Pizzeria in Hillsborough,NC. I guess that made up for it. We’ve had a lot of pizza is our life. When Page and I first started dating he would bring over a frozen pizza after work. We would eat, drink, smoke, and talk about life. I’ve stopped smoking and the pizza has gotten better, but we’re still the same.
This was the first holiday I’ve spent with Page’s mom’s side of the family. As a whole, I’d describe his Aunts as liberal, used to be strict Mennonite people. They love music, laughter, good food and say what the feel. It’s amazing. I’m from North Carolina; saying how you feel is not what southerners do. Although, I do have a desire to be totally honest and call people on their bullshit. Most of the time, I just revert to my old southern ways.
Family gatherings are interesting. Everyone loves everyone, but everyone also has a deep history with each other. I don’t know what that history is, but you never know when “shit’s going to hit the fan.” I like family drama, when I’m not directly involved.
Page’s cousin’s wife has a baby that she doesn’t allow very many people to hold. Part of me was like, “How sad. I wonder why?” the other part of me was thinking, “Oh snap, they are coming over, what’s going to happen?”
Well, nothing too interesting to report.
Gideon got to meet his Great grandparents among other extended family. Having a lot of generations in one place is an amazing photo op. There are so many things we do in life for the picture. It’s very strange that we get together to take a picture for proof of the time we got together.
The route to Harrisonburg is sprinkled with wineries, breweries and, cows. The mountain views and wide open spaces are beautiful. Maybe next time we’ll stop. This time we were just trying to rush to our destination before our baby woke up.
First road trip with a baby…check! Next time…first flight.
