We’ve made a commitment to spend more time where we live and to limit our future weekend trips.
Why?
1.We want to build community where we live. We have been back in North Carolina for almost a year and we have made two (new) friends. We want more! More people over for dinner, more moms to raise babies with, more people to call on, more people to borrow things from. People that will laugh, commiserate, love, and debate with us.
Do you have friends? If not, you need some. If you live near us we will be your friend. Here are other ways to build community:
- Go to a meet up. Actually, go to a few, results may vary. Meet-up is the best, there is a gathering for everyone. When I was living in Dallas,TX I had ZERO friends. I didn’t no anyone. Well, I went to a Philippine dinner I found on meetup. Long story short, I became a member of NAAAP. I guess I identified with Asian Americans, or at least the food. They said I was an honorary Asian, which is pretty much the greatest honor ever.
- When someone invites you to do something enthusiastically say, “Yes!” Even if you feel like being a hermit, say yes. Humans aren’t meant to be alone. Plus, they are more likely to invite you to do more things if you say yes.
- Get involved in your community. Join a church, take a class, go out into the world. Sometimes we get freaked out thinking about how everyone is in their separate houses watching tv and looking at facebook. Isn’t it weird?
Just so you know, I gravitate towards being alone. I have to actively fight against that. I happen to be married to an extreme extrovert, so that helps.
2.Finish paying off our school loans.
We follow Dave Ramsey’s plan. It’s ten baby steps to financial freedom! We’re on step two which is, “pay off your debt.” We’ve both been working towards financial freedom since 2012, to date we’ve payed off roughly 43k and have 19k to go.
What will we do when we are debt free?
Whatever the hell we want to do. Not really, but our dollars will go wherever we want them to go.
3.Become involved in a church.
We are Christians. The kind that believe the bible. We like the idea of home church, think bible study in your house. Basically, a gathering of Christians with no liturgy. After a brief search we’ve settled on a small church in our area that I believe is genuinely interested in loving people. Also the Pastor, who is Korean, offered to have us over for homemade Korean food and Soju. Sign me up.
So anyways, Church is on Sunday so we have to be here if we want to go.
Staying home means more local adventures, here is a peek at some of our recent outings:
Playing 10,000 in the lawn at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro,NC
Hiking along the Eno River with our obnoxious new baby carrier.
Things to think about:
Joining us in our August challenge
Talking about parenting styles is more controversial that politics and religion combined.
My Spanish name was “Margarita,” now that’s foreshadowing.
