TofuXpress was kind enough to send me their tofu press to try out during our vegan challenge. So far, I’ve used it to make two delicious recipes. One is Minimalist Baker: Crispy Peanut Tofu. The other is a breakfast scramble that I used for breakfast tacos, and as a side dish. I used Nasoya Organic Tofu for my experiment. You should definitely buy organic soy products, most soybeans are genetically modified and sprayed with glyphosate (aka Round-up), which was recently labeled as probably carcinogenic to humans. When you buy organic you are saying no to GMOS,and no to glyphostate. Pesticides made with artificial ingredients are not allowed in products with an organic label. Please buy organic whenever you can.
First of all, what the heck is tofu?
Also known as bean curd, it’s a food made by coagulating soy milk and then pressing the resulting curds into soft white blocks.
Why should we eat tofu?
High in protein, calcium, and low in fat. It’s linked to lower risk of some types of cancer, lower cholesterol, decreased heart disease, and even longevity. Here is a breakdown of all the benefits of tofu: One of the healthiest foods.
Tofu has been something that I enjoy eating when someone else prepares it for me, but I’m like, “where do I even start?” All I’ve known is that towels, plates, and cans where involved in the pressing process. It’s necessary to press tofu to get the water out, to add flavor, and better texture. I like kitchen tools that make things easier, simple is better.
TofuXpress is really well designed, and about as simple as it can get. I mean literally, you just put the tofu in the container and press down the locking spring mechanism. I left my TofuXpress in the fridge over night, and then it was good to go. Pour out the liquid and move on with your life. Marie at TofuXpress has a a great video demonstration on how to use the TofuXpress.
I must say that I’m no longer intimidated by tofu! Bonus: You can also make cheese with the tofuXpress. Mine came with a high quality cheese cloth that is great for straining my homemade almond and coconut milk. I think the TofuXpress is a great buy for someone who eats tofu regularly, or anyone who wants to START eating more tofu.
I am a total tofu novist. If I can do it, you should give it a try.
