I met with Durham entrepreneur, Rebecca, to talk about her company YAWP!
I expected to be meeting with a “crunchy hippie.” Boy was I wrong. Rebecca, Founder and Owner of YAWP! Is a former professional Opera singer, paleo enthusiast, and has her PhD in design. Above all, she is a nutrition bar maven. She has tried every bar on the market, and tested over a hundred versions of her own bars. She still makes the bars by hand in a community kitchen, and does not forsake quality.
She started making bars after discovering that there was nothing healthy to eat at the airport while she was traveling(I heard that!) She has created what I believe to be one of the healthiest, and most unique bars. Rebecca has kindly giving us YAWP! bars to fuel us during our vegan challenge. She also gave me the opportunity to share some with one lucky winner.
These bar are grain free, contain no added sugar, and are made with organic ingredients.
They are compliant with Whole 30, paleo, and vegan diets. The variety pack has all three of their flavors: Naked, Cafe Mocha, Coconut Chai. A traditional bar sweetened with dates may have about 5-6 dates, YAWP! bars have 1 date. Instead of being filled with sugar these bars are almond based, and filled with nuts and seeds. I think we’re conditioned to bite into a nutrition bar, and for it to taste like candy. A YAWP! nutrition bar doesn’t rely on sugar for all the flavor, but rather, uses: cinnamon, vanilla, salt, chai spice, cocoa, coffee, and Himalayan salt to enhance the flavor. Check out a more detailed description of YAWP! Nutrition bar ingredients.
I’ve tried one of each YAWP! nutrition bar…
Naked– I love this bar. I liked how there is a generous amount of cinnamon. I can’t believe that a bar so crunchy is grain-free. This version is my favorite because I could see myself eating it more frequently than the other two.
Cafe Mocha-Coffee! Mocha! Yes! This bar was awesome. I like the richness and depth of flavor provided by the coffee and cocoa.
Coconut Chai– I like this one, but wouldn’t choose it over the other two. The chai spice is quite potent, I wish I could taste the coconut a bit more. If you love Chai tea you would enjoy this bar.
When I eat a YAWP! nutrition bar I feel like I’m eating a nutrition bar made for a foodie. There’s no junk and I would even give these to my kid if he had more than two teeth. Perfect time for a YAWP! nutrition bar: Quick breakfast, traveling, or after a hike. I plan on keeping a couple in my diaper bag as “emergency snacks.”
